Vintage Electric Appliances

Those of us that share a passion for restoring and repairing vintage appliances, tend to have preferences to either restore old appliances/furniture or to just repair electric domestic appliances. Then there are of course people that like to do both. The term electric domestic appliances repair applies to both categories.

Recently a restoration/conversion was done for a customer that wanted to use an old 1950 ice box for a wine chiller and a feature in his entertainment area. The wooden box was fitted on to a steel base with wheels. Inside the metal frame the compressor, condenser and drip tray was installed. We wanted to line the inside of the cabin with stainless steal sheeting but the customer wanted the inside original. The evaporator, fan and thermostat were fitted on the inside. The system was charged with a CFC refrigerant free gas (134a). A nice bright light was fitted which made the inside contends stand out. Somebody suggested an old fashion yellowish lamp and I must admit this gave the box more character.

Other memorable appliances that I have worked on are an English Electric refrigerator and a 1920 Garland stove. The material that was used in those hey days was of a top quality and the artisan skill to details. I always consider it an honor to work these masterpieces where the old master trades’ men has worked before.
