Diabetes causes poor blood circulation to the extremities and there for the feet, Foot is a common side effect of this condition. Knowing the diabetics signs symptoms can prevent foot problems developing like gangrene and even amputations.

A condition known as Diabetic Neuropathy (nerve damage) sets in. This condition happens when blood sugar levels have been uncontrolled over a long period of time and the nerves system gets damaged. Signs and Symptoms to look out for are;

  • Loss of sensation in feet. Therefore cannot fell burns, bump or blisters and sharp objects.
  • Dry skin and cracked heals
  • Calluses are formed
  • Skin ulcers like pressure sores are common
  • Nail growth slows down
  • Slow healing of wounds that are already present will be exacerbates by this proses of to little oxygen reaching the feet.

Foot Care and tips;

  • Check feet regularly for pressure sores, blister or ulcers.
  • Never cut corns and calluses with a blade rather see your doctor
  • Don’t break blister
  • When the following signs appear visit your doctor, when there is redness around a wound or heat with swelling or pain.
  • Don’t cut toenails to short and cut across to avoit ingrowing nails.
  • Don’t soak feet in hot water because this will dry out the skin
  • Wear clean socks and stocking everyday
  • Avoid socks and stockings that fit to tight at the top
  • Choose shoes carefully. The shoe should have a thick flexible sole with a close toe and heel.

People with diabetes should pay special attention to there feet all the time before a condition sets. Prevention is better than cure.Always look out for the diabetic signs and symptoms.
